This just got released on the Kobold Quarterly website, so now I can share it! This is the Mithril Dragon, a beast I drew for the Midgard Bestiary, published by Open Design. He was fun as heck to draw, and I think he turned out rather well!

Now I get to cross "doing work for a monster manual or bestiary" off my bucket list.

Again with the lateral flattening, though I can't quite squeeze a spatula out of (not to mention into) this one--I love that twisting tail! If you ignore the horns, there's a real theropod quality to the head--the shape, the teeth, and of course the preorbital fenestra. The stylization here has a real classic, old-school quality for some reason, kind of William Stout "art dee-no" meets Mark Schultz '50s adventure comics. I wonder if that was intentional on your part, or if I'm reading too much into the bold shadows and the wash-y gray shading...? Either way, it definitely "feels" appropriate to a D&D-stylee bestiary!

Love the drapery-like folds of those wings, btw--they look very "crisp" and substantial, like ship sails!

Another belated thanks, old friend! And you know I'd never draw a dragon without making at least a little bit theropod-like.:)

Ok, so a much belated reply - you know, the ERY best thing about this for me is that dark dark ink black. The marker work here is utterly masterful, and the sense of lighting and value give so much volume to the beastie. This is really really nice work!

Thanks!! I'm glad this piece is getting such a good reaction, since it's my first real dragon paid illustration.

I like the interesting cross-section of the tail. Flattened but not ribbony is surprisingly hard to draw, I've found. :P

Thanks! Appropriately, the way Tony DiTerlizzi drew dragon and serpent tails back in old monster manuals is a huge influence on the way I draw them.

Huh, cool! I find it interesting to track the heritage of those artistic memes.

Beautiful! I love how natural it looks! I always think it's hard to make dragons in air look normal. :giggle: Nice shading too!
